Joe Van Gogh loves innovation. Innovation isn’t about being the best. It’s about being curious and having a willingness to take risks and make mistakes because you’re excited about something. Our curiosity and excitement have guided us for over thirty years.
Our favorite coffee producers love innovation too. The region of Yirgacheffee became famous decades ago as the birthplace of washed coffees in southern Ethiopia. Then producers there began experimenting with naturals (also known as dry processed or unwashed coffee). Natural processing is much more sustainable (using less water and energy, as the coffee is dried on raised patios with the cherry left on), but it’s much more difficult and challenging to farm. To do it well, you need experience, dedication, and an enthusiasm for taking chances to achieve sublime results.
Someone who also exhibits all three of those qualities is our own director of coffee (and resident coffee philosopher), Kevin. His first cupping of an Ethiopian natural was a coffee that came from an area in Yirgacheffee named Aricha. The intensely fruity, sweet flavors blew his mind. “It opened my eyes to what was possible in coffee. It stands out like nothing else.” He knew right away we had to buy this coffee to share it with our customers.
When you open a bag of our Organic Ethiopia Aricha, right away you’ll be dazzled by the strong, fruity smell of berries. That’s the magic of a natural.
