Our barista skills course combines hands-on practice and group discussion to explore techniques for preparing espresso, steaming milk, and caring for espresso machines.
Espresso is the core building block of so many beloved café beverages. In this course, we examine how to use an espresso machine to prepare espresso, and how to utilize tools behind the bar to ensure that our espresso tastes good, consistently. We’ll explore how to operate steam wands safely and effectively to create smooth and silky steamed milk for lattes and cappuccinos.
Finally, we’ll conclude the course by discussing important end-of-day cleaning practices that help our equipment continue operating at peak performance.
The method we use to brew coffee has a pronounced impact on the final cup. This course combines demonstration with hands-on practice to introduce participants to various percolation and immersion brewing methods.
Learners will gain experience with multiple manual brewers. Some of the devices we may explore in class include the Kalita Wave, the Chemex, the French Press, and the Aeropress. Along the way, we’ll discuss the features that make each method unique, as well as general best practices for getting the most complexity and flavor from your brews.
As coffee professionals, developing the ability to taste and evaluate coffees allows us to communicate more effectively across the supply chain on topics like quality and cup character. In Cupping & Sensory Skills, will explore "cupping," the industry-standard protocol for tasting and evaluating coffees, how to conduct oneself professionally in these spaces, and how to identify and discuss flavor notes.
We typically taste 6-8 different coffees in this class, so come prepared to enjoy and engage with a variety of our products - including new seasonal releases - and explore how to talk about the tasting experience with customers and other coffee professionals.
Our wholesale clients also have access to our digital learning platform on Thinkific, which includes a library of how-to videos covering a variety of coffee topics that can be accessed anytime, anywhere.
We’ve reserved up to two accounts for each of our wholesale clients, and recommend that those slots go to owners, managers, or shift supervisors. If you’d like to activate an account, reach out to learning@joevangogh.com with the name of your business and the full name and email address of the person who wants access to the platform.
